Additionally, I remember to make sure they’re completely charged before I leave on my trip the night before. I recently purchased a little power bank in addition to a full-sized one; it plugs directly into the bottom of my iPhone. It has less capacity but is lighter and easier to carry around without a wire.
USB Cables / Ports
Usually, I pack two or three standard USB ports that will suit my Apple phone in case I need to plug it into a socket or use it to charge. I always carry one with me in every bag so I can easily access them as needed. In order to charge my power bank and a few other devices, I also make sure I have a Micro USB cord. Usually, the power bank comes with these.
Travel adapter/plug
They are really important! Make sure you have a travel adaptor that will function in the places you are visiting by researching ahead of time what plug outlets are used there. However, keep in mind that not all “universal” adapters are truly universal. For instance, none of my “universal” adapters fit the one I needed for Namibia. Small Wind-Resistant Umbrella
Because of the unpredictable weather where I live in the UK, I always carry a small, compact umbrella with me. Additionally, I frequently travel with it as a convenient “just in case.” When the heavens opened up on me twice on my most recent solo trip to Barcelona, I was really glad I had it!
Condensed Waterproof Jacket
In a similar vein, I pack a compact, lightweight rain jacket that fits inside my case and folds up into a small bag. This was welcome in Luxembourg, where it rained much of the winter I spent there.
Packing cubes or dry bags
Dry bags come in quite handy when traveling with a backpack to keep my belongings and clothes organized. Having everything organized into bags makes life so much easier than having everything in the main compartment, especially when you’re trying to find something. If you are hiking and there is a chance of rain, as I did on the Inca Trail, they can also assist in keeping your clothes dry. Packing cubes accomplishes the same thing if I’m traveling with a suitcase. However, they don’t keep anything dry. I prefer the ones that maximize the capacity in your case by being able to be compacted down with a second zip.
Practical Apps for Smartphones
Consider your vacation itinerary and download any apps you may require ahead of time. I use the Citymapper app a lot when I travel, in addition to the applications for trains and airlines. They not only pack down into a tiny pouch that only takes up a little room in your backpack, but they are lightweight and excellent at keeping you warm. The weights you receive will vary based on how chilly the weather will be. It’s a light one since I caught mine for Iceland in the summer at Mountain Warehouse. This summer, it was also useful when traveling up into the Swiss Alps.
Campsite Travel Towel
If you’re going to be camping or sleeping in hostels, bring some travel towels. Since they are usually flat, they only take up a little room. They feel less abundant, yet they function just as effectively as a regular towel because they are also incredibly absorbent. I purchased one for my journey around Iceland in a camper van and also used it on the Inca Trail.
Camera
It makes sense to bring a camera body that is as lightweight as feasible if you have an option. However, I recently updated to a Canon 5D Mark IV camera body, so I’m doing better!
